They show up quietly, often at night. On your belly, your breasts, your hips or thighs. For some, they itch. For others, they just appear – pale, red, purple or silvery lines that weren’t there before.
They’re called stretch marks, and they’re incredibly common during pregnancy. In fact, the majority of all pregnant people get them at some point. And yet, so many of us are surprised (or upset) when they show up.
Why do stretch marks appear?
When your body grows quickly, the skin stretches to keep up — and sometimes, the deeper layers of the skin can’t quite follow. The result? Small tears that become visible on the surface.
Hormones also play a role. Genetics too. Some get many. Some get none. It’s not about how strong or soft your skin is – it’s about how your body responds to change.
Can I prevent them?
There’s no guaranteed way to avoid stretch marks. Creams and oils can help reduce dryness and itching, and they might support skin elasticity – but no product can promise prevention.
And honestly, maybe that’s okay.
A different perspective
What if we stopped seeing stretch marks as flaws? What if they were signs of growth? Proof that your body has made space — for someone else. That it’s done something big. Something powerful.
Because that’s exactly what they are.
