🤍 It’s common to feel pain at the start
Even though people say breastfeeding “shouldn’t hurt,” it’s super common to experience pain in the first few days. That doesn’t mean something is wrong, but if the pain continues – or gets worse – it’s a good idea to talk to a midwife or lactation consultant.
🤍 Your milk might not come in right away
Many people expect milk to come immediately after birth. But it often takes a few days – sometimes 3–5. What baby gets in the meantime is colostrum – the thick, yellowish “first milk” that’s packed with antibodies and nutrients.
🤍 Latching is a skill
It’s not just about putting baby to the breast. A good latch takes technique, patience and sometimes help from a pro. It might take a few tries – and that’s okay.
🤍 You’re allowed to supplement
Sometimes breastfeeding doesn’t feel possible, for physical or emotional reasons. You can still be a loving, connected, amazing parent if you bottle-feed, mix-feed, or choose another way.
🤍 It gets easier
The first days and weeks can feel overwhelming, but for many, it truly does get easier. And if it doesn’t – you’re still doing an incredible job.
You don’t have to do this alone. Ask for help, rest when you can, and remember – however you feed your baby, you’re doing something amazing.
