Childbirth is powerful – both physically and mentally. The body goes through enormous changes, and it’s not uncommon for certain types of injuries to occur during delivery. But it’s not something we talk about often enough.

Here are some of the most common birth injuries that can occur during vaginal birth:

Perineal tears

This is probably the most common type of birth injury. The perineum – the area between the vagina and the anus – can tear naturally during birth or be cut with an episiotomy. Tears are classified into four degrees, depending on how deep and extensive the injury is.

Labial or clitoral tears

Smaller tears in the labia or around the clitoris are common but can still be very painful. These usually heal well, but may require stitches depending on their size and location.

Vaginal tears

These can occur deeper inside the vagina and may not always be visible externally. However, they can still cause pain and discomfort afterward, especially during urination or sex.

Muscle or nerve damage

Some people experience nerve damage, often due to pressure or prolonged pushing during labor. This can result in numbness or weakness in the pelvic floor.

Pelvic organ prolapse

After birth, the muscles and tissues in the pelvic area can be weakened, which may cause one or more pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum) to drop or press against the vaginal wall. This may cause a feeling of heaviness or pressure.

Why aren’t we talking about this more?

Many experience injuries after childbirth – but few feel prepared. One reason may be that these topics are still surrounded by shame or silence. But knowledge is power, and when you know what to expect, it’s easier to get the help you need.
